Light the Flame for Workers' Rights

The Olympic torch relay and the symbolism of the Olympic torch, respect, excellence and friendship, provide a fantastic opportunity for us to demand an Olympics that respects the human rights of all workers who help to make the Games possible.

Torch

Evidence from the London 2012 and Beijing 2008 Olympics shows that workers making Olympic-branded goods and sportswear continue to be exploited. They are paid poverty wages for working excessively long hours in unsafe conditions, often on short-term contracts, and have no voice on their pay and working conditions. The Playfair 2012 campaign needs your activism to help end this exploitation. You can help make a difference by taking the latest campaign action calling on the International Olympic Committee, head of the Olympic family, to ‘Light the flame for workers’ human rights’ by ensuring that all workers involved in delivering the Games have their rights respected.

We’re also encouraging groups, students and consumers to organise ‘torch relay’ themed stunts/actions in your local communities to raise awareness about the issues and mobilise others to sign the IOC petition. Playfair 2012 has produced a pack filled with fun ideas for actions and messaging to help you get started with organising a local event.
