Thursday, 18 February 2010 17:58
Labour Behind the Label stands in solidarity with the thousands of brave Burmese garment workers who have gone on strike this month to demand improvements to the working lives of garment workers in Burma.
On February 8th 2010, 3,600 workers from two factories, OPAL 2 and Mya, in the Hlaing Tharyar Industrial Zone of the Burmese capital, Rangoon came out on strike to demand a wage increase of 10US$ a month. The next day, workers at the Taiyee shoe factory, and the Kya Lay garment factory also came out to demand the enforcement of public holidays, an increase in their daily wage, proper payment of overtime and other basic rights. The Burmese military regime responded to this action by bringing in hundreds of armed police and warned the workers that they would face a violent crackdown if they did not disperse peacefully. On February 10th the workers had little choice but to accept a compromise settlement of a monthly increase of US$2 –US$5.
Burma: Concerns for striking workers in Rangoon
Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:04
Labour Behind the Label is calling for solidarity with thousands of garment workers from industrial zones around Rangoon, Burma, who have launched industrial actions over the last weeks. The actions are being organised to demand an increase in salaries, improvements in conditions and respect of their basic labour rights in defiance of a ban on all kinds of protests and gatherings. As the number of actions increase so does the concern for the safety of workers given the record of the Burmese government for violent repression.
