The Clean Clothes Campaign, represented in the UK by Labour Behind the Label, has written an open letter to the new Global Social Compliance Programme, brainchild of four of the world's biggest retailers, saying that "has strong reservations about the value of the initiative" and explaining why at the moment we see no value in accepting an invitation to meet with it.

British retailers Tesco and Asda (owned by Wal-Mart) have joined with fellow giant retailers Carrefour and Metro to announced the formation of the Global Social Compliance Programme (GSCP) - supposedly to encourage a unified approach to promoting good working conditions in the supply chain.

The GSCP represents business' latest proposal to address sweatshop conditions in the global supply chains of multinational corporations, but with an aggregate annual sale of over $500 billion this initiative potentially shadows all others.

Right now the GSCP is consulting various labour rights organisations on the initiative; inviting them to take part in their advisory board; and to give comments on their draft code.
